GPT-4.5 plans to push back the limits?

OpenAI's GPT-4 language model is considered by most to be the most advanced language model used to power modern artificial intelligence (AI). 

It is used with great success in the ChatGPT chatbot, as well as in other AIs in a similar way. 

But that's not the end of its development! 

Like GPT-3.5, a GPT-4.5 language model may well be launched before we see a true next-generation GPT-5.

What is GPT-4.5?

GPT-4.5 is the next theorized advance in OpenAI language models. It follows on from the extremely successful GPT-4 model, currently available to GPT Plus subscribers. 

It is expected to make its debut before the release of any next-generation GPT-5 language model. More importantly, it would probably bring some improvements over what's currently available.

Although the GPT-3.5 model is widely used in the free version of ChatGPT and in a few other online tools, it still lags far behind GPT-4. GPT-4.5. 

What can GPT-4.5 do?

At the time of writing, GPT-4.5 has not yet been officially announced, so we don't know for sure what it will be able to do. 

However, we can speculate based on OpenAI's past development.

GPT-4.5 would probably be built using more data points than GPT-4. Compared to GPT-3.5's modest 175 billion parameters, GPT-4 was created with an incredible 1.8 billion parameters. As a result, GPT-4.5 would almost certainly take into account more parameters and be trained on more data, as well as more recent data.

At the time of writing, GPT-4 is limited to data prior to autumn 2021. Any future GPT-4.5 model would probably be based on information up to at least 2022, and potentially even 2023. 

It could also have immediate access to web search and plugins, as we've seen gradually introduced in GPT-4 over the last few months.

The launch of GPT-4 also added the ability for ChatGPT to recognize images and respond more naturally, with more nuance, to prompts. GPT-4.5 could thus add new capabilities, such as analyzing videos or performing some of its plugin functions natively, such as reading PDF documents, or even helping to teach you the rules of board games.

GPT-4.5 may also be able to memorize more information, using past conversations to build on in future responses. 

GPT-4.5 could also be more efficient, requiring fewer resources to run than existing GPT-4 models, potentially enabling it to run on smaller devices and respond faster.

When will GPT-4.5 be available?

There is no timetable for the release of GPT-4.5. 

Initial estimates and rumors based on the early 2023 launch of GPT-4 were aiming for a September/October 2023 release of GPT-4.5, but this seems unlikely now, given the proximity of the date and the absence of any announcement to that effect.

For the moment, we don't know when GPT-4.5 will be available for use, although some have suggested that if OpenAI were to release its plugins, web search, code interpreter and custom instructions from the beta phase, this could constitute an upgrade to GPT-4.5 in itself.

And GPT-5?

Although there was a lot of excitement about the potential of GPT-5 when GPT-4 was first released. OpenAI rejected any discussion of GPT-5 and made it clear that it was not actively training a future GPT-5 language model. 

The company claims that much more in-depth safety audits need to be carried out before future language models can be developed. 

CEO Sam Altman has repeatedly said that he expects future GPT models to be incredibly disruptive to the way we live and work, so OpenAI wants to take more time and care with future releases.

However, OpenAI has more recently trademarked the name GPT-5. It has launched a web crawler that will collect information from the Internet for training future language models, probably GPT-5. 

This could be a problem, however, as OpenAI is being sued by several organizations and individuals for the illegal use of their work in the formation of GPT language models.

Conlusion

In short, the release of GPT-5 seems a long way off. GPT-4.5 may not have been announced, but it's much more likely to appear in the near future.
